With over 189 appearances and rockin 29 different brands Michelle Obama created a buzz of over $14 million in purchases after each appearance with people running out to get the latest in fashion. I’d say the economy has definitely been stimulated.
New York Mayor Bloomberg asks the federal government for permission to ban the 1.7 million New Yorkers on food stamps from using them to buy sodas, sports drinks and fruit drinks with added sugar. This same proposal from Minnesota was denied by the USDA in 2004. Currently food stamp recipients cannot buy tobacco, alcohol or prepared hot meals with the federal assistance, but can use them for products like soda, candy and chips. This request to restrict food stamps is the latest of a series of healthy living initiatives by the Bloomberg administration, which has already overhauled the cafeteria offerings in NYC’s public schools.
